home Tim has been a dog lover all of his life. His earliest experience training dogs was for bird hunting. His Yellow Lab, Sally, was an excellent hunting and retrieving dog. By the time Sally became to old to continue hunting, Tim had become involved in the Schutzhund sport.
Tim became a police dog handler in 1992. After two wash-outs, he acquired Irk (Dan), who came from Hungary . Danny was a very independent dog who worked purely because he loved it. We joked that Tim was Dan chauffeur, driving him from call to call. Dan was a “man trailing machine”. If he didn’t track, there was really nothing to be tracked. Tim and Dan earned their BH and SchH 1 when they were together less than one year. Pretty good considering both were completely green when they became a team. Tim titled Dan to SchH 2, DPO 2.
Tim’s second police dog was Nico von Holzland, a son of the world famous, Uras von Haus Anja. Nico was a much more affectionate dog than Dan. He and Tim shared a very close bond. Tim titled Nico BH only after a few months, then to SchH 3 and DPO 2. Nico scored 100 perfect points on his DPO 2 track. They trained very hard for an FH, but could never get into a trial then Nico's health failed. Nico was also an awesome narcotics detection dog.
When Tim bought Mutz 2 von der Briken, Mutz was a somewhat seasoned patrol and narcotics detection dog. Mutz had earned his BH with a previous handler. There were some nasty battles in the beginning. Mutz was quite head strong and there was a lot of conflict caused by early training methods. Tim retrained Mutz using more positive methods, not an easy task with a three year old dog. Mutz earned his SchH 1, SchH 2 (winning nearly all of the trophies in that trial at Lehigh Valley Police and SchH Club), then his SchH 3. Mutz earned a well-deserved 99 points in protection. Even the judge commented that he looked very hard for a place to take that one point. But, sadly, Mutz had a lot of trouble with the jumps during obedience. It was truly his finest obedience performance, but the jumps are worth big points. It was days after earning his SchH 3 that Tim learned Mutz had hip dysplasia, after being rated OFA good only a few years before. Mutz had retired from police work prior to earning his SchH 3. Tim wanted to concentrate on the “new”, more positive training style.
Then began the search for a new dog…again some bad luck, then came Vic, who was acquired from Sean Rivera of Absolute K9. Sean had originally kept Vic for himself from one of his litters, but didn’t feel he had the time to devote to Vic since his other dog had such a promising career ahead of her. Vic was 6 months old when he came to live with Tim. He is progressing extremely well in all phases of the Schutzhund sport. Tim is very excited and will tell you that he is now a “Mali Man”.
Tim is one of the Club’s helpers, the Vice-President, and one of the Training Directors. He loves to amuse people with the antics of his sweet little Aussie, Brixie, the “SchH 5” dog.
