Carol became interested in the Schutzhund sport through her work as a police dog handler. She has been a member of USA since 1988. She earned her first title, a DPO 2, with her police service dog Ozark vom Heisthaus SchH 2 (raised and trained to SchH 2 by Mid Atlantic's very own Ron). She is also a member of the American Working Malinois Association.
In 1990 Carol competed in the North American Championships with Ozark. That is where she discovered the Belgian Malinois and knew one day she would have one. She presently has 3.
In 1994, Vyon van Dupae's Kennelke (Falco) was purchased by the police department for which Carol worked to be handled by her. Together they fought crime for eight years. They earned their DPO 1 and DPO 2. Falco is Carol's highest scoring dog, earning a 280 for his DPO 2. Not bad for a ring sport washout, who heeled on the "wrong side" when she began training him. He was the most controlled, yet most protective police service dog she ever had. Falco never took his eyes of his handler when she was out of the car. He was always ready to bark a warning at anyone who so much as took a step toward her, or to leap out through the open driver's window if his bark was not convincing enough of his intentions.
In 2001, Carol purchased the dog that would become her third and last police service dog, Axel. Axel was a big, young, green Malinois. Axel earned his BH in 2002, after which he joined the police department, and continued in his training to become Carol's first dog titled to SchH 3. Axel loves to work and it shows. In 2006 the police department, for reasons not disclosed, opted to end the K9 unit by ending their contract that leased Axel's services. It's their loss. Axel had an impressive record as a police dog, making more felony arrests than both of his predecessors combined. Axel competed at the 2006 American Working Malinois Association Nationals. Although he just could not work out the track, he earned a very respectable 92 points in obedience, and ended with an awesome 97 point protection routine which tied the high scoring protection dog for the championship.
Axel earned his DPO 2 at Mid Atlantic's May, 2007 trial earning High Obedience, High Protection, High Owner Trained and High In Trial. Axel also earned his highest tracking score of 91 points.
Sadly, even Malinois' do not live forever. Falco, Carol's K9 soul mate, passed away in June, 2007, at nearly 15 1/2 years of age. He lived a very long, full, and happy life. He will be missed forever.
In March, 2008, Axel was laid to rest at 9 years old. He had become ill and it was determined that he had cancer. He was a rare dog who performed as well on the Schutzhund field as he did on the street as a police dog. He was a very sweet, handsome boy who left us too early.
Carol is presently working a very promising young Malinois she acquired from Ivan Balabanov. His name is J'Ak ot Sato Bulgar; his call name is "Ami". The name is French for "friend". He is full of fire, but, at the end of the day, he likes to be hugged, much like Axel. Now that Carol has retired from police work, Ami will have her undivided attention. He seems to like it that way.
